Cutting Meters of Silk Ribbon Efficiently

Cutting Meters of Silk Ribbon Efficiently

Let's say you have about 100 invitations and each invitation requires 50 centimetre worth of silk ribbons (totalling 50 meters). Instead of cutting each silk ribbon out one by one, wouldn't it be easier to cut it almost all at once? Fear not, we have just the solution for you!

What's the quickest way to cut meters of silk ribbons?

You will first need the essentials such as silk ribbons, scissors, a pencil, a ruler and cardboard. Then follow the few steps which will help you cut silk ribbons more efficiently.

What you will need:

  • Silk Ribbon
If you purchased silk ribbon from our shop then you are all set! Otherwise, any other silk ribbon or twine works perfectly well.

  • Scissors
Great scissors, sharp ones are highly recommended! Blunt scissors or anything less will damage the silk ribbons which needs to be avoided at all costs.

  • Pencil, Ruler & Cardboard
Any HB pencil or regular pencil will work. The ruler/measuring tape and cardboard must be greater or equal to the length of the silk ribbon you need. For example, it would not make sense to have a ruler or cardboard that is only 30cm in length when your silk ribbon needs to be 50cm.

Follow these steps:

  1. Measure and cut the cardboard.

For example, if your silk ribbons need to be 50cm per invite, you will need cardboard that is at least 50cm. Measure and mark the cardboard then cut it to size. The width of the cardboard must be larger than the width of the silk ribbon.

  2. Wrap the silk ribbon around the cardboard.

Very Important! *Before you wrap the silk ribbon, make sure your silk ribbon is silky smooth! This will save you time smoothing out individual strands of silk ribbon later. Refer to our silk ribbon smoothing tip for more information.

Once you have the cardboard ready, you can begin to wrap your silk ribbon around it. Wrapping it around will allow you to cut the silk ribbons to the desired 50cm length.

  3. Cut the silk ribbon to length.

Once you are done wrapping the silk ribbon around the cardboard, grab your scissors and cut the silk ribbon on both edges of the cardboard. Make sure your scissors are sharp and not blunt, this makes a very big difference in cutting your silk ribbons that feature beautiful straight edges.

  4. Repeat the process if you have more silk ribbons to cut.

Since you are cutting a total of 50 meters which means you will have 10 spools of 5-meter silk to go through. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for 9 more times and you will have 100 strands of 50cm silk ribbons ready to be tied around 100 invitations.

  5. Remember this for next time!

Perfect, you did it! Your silk ribbon is all cut to 50cm and ready to be assembled/tied. If you found this tip helpful, share it with a friend or tag us on Instagram with your new silk ribbon-cutting skills.
